Over the years you might have seen him playing basketball at the YMCA, or participating in the summer Fisherman’s Picnic basketball tourney, he’s hard to miss. At 6’10”, 250 pounds, Bobby Hawkinson stands out in a crowd.
The grandson of Jerry and Janet Johansen, Lutsen, just concluded his collegiate basketball career. For his outstanding play he was named first Team All-UAA (University Athletic Association), an honor voted on by the Association’s eight head coaches.
Hawkinson ended his senior year at New York University by becoming the programs third player to score more than 1,000 points. He finished with 720 rebounds, 1,009 points, and had a .593 field goal percentage. During his senior year Bobby averaged 20.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, had 71 assists, 25 steals and blocked 16 shots.
An economics major, an AP Scholar, National Honor Society member, College of Arts and Science Dean’s List, Bobby plans to pursue a career in business and live in New York City. And when he’s here visiting his grandparents, he will be pursuing a game at the Y, or shooting around with Will Ramberg, a local friend he made through hoops. “We are following Will’s games at the University of Minnesota,” said Jerry. “We’re big fans of Wills too.”
