Haussner sets personal best in 110 meter hurdles

Cook County senior Jack Haussner finished almost one full second ahead of second place in the 110 high hurdles at the Matt Kero Invitational held Friday, May 10 at Denfeld high school.

Competing against competition from the Duluth area schools, Haussner crossed the finish line in 15.85 seconds, his fastest time ever. David Cornelius of Hermantown placed second with a time of 16.81.

Haussner finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.82. He was fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.77 and he placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 4 inches.

Senior Will Surbaugh had a great run in the 3200 (2-mile) meters, placing second with a time of 10:30.33. Will was in first place until the stretch but a runner from Moose Lake Willow River who passed him and won by about two seconds surprised him.

Sophomore Kevin Viren ran 5:01.56 in the 1600- meter (1-mile) run to place 15th. Keegan Morrison placed 30th with a time of 5:34.28 and Brayden Schmidt placed 33rd in 5:53.29.

 

 

The mile relay team of Tanner DeBoer, Kevin Viren, Ben Rex and Keegan Morrison placed 12th in 4:22.24.

The boys’ 4×800 meter relay placed 5th in 9:36.36. Running on the varsity relay was Will Surbaugh, Kevin Viren, Brayden Schmidt and Keegan Morrison.

Running on the “B” varsity 4-800 relay was Tanner DeBoer, Trent Spry, Ben Rex, and TJ Surbaugh. They finished with a time of 11:54.30.

Tanner DeBoer ran 64.16 for the 400 meters. Ben Rex crossed in 67.08, and Haddon Taylor finished in 80.36. They placed 29th, 33rd, and 36th.

Raymond Degroat ran the 200 meters in 32.70. Kyler Hansen ran 35.24 and Andrew Hallberg 39.77 to place 40th, 42nd and 43rd overall.

Eighth-graders Haddon Taylor and Kyler Hansen ran 100 meters in 16.70 and 16.90, and seventh-grader Andrew Hallberg ran 18.39 to finish 46th, 47th, and 48th place.

Raymond Degroat threw the shot put 26 feet to finish 34th. In the discus, Degroat placed 27th with a throw of 68 feet, 5 inches.

The boys finished in eighth place out of 14 schools.

Girls’ varsity track

Anna Hay ran the 100 meters in 14.72, placing 15th in a field of 42 runners. Payton Dobbin ran 15.25 to finish 26th, and Ellen Callender ran 15.70 to place 30th.

“Ellen had a big PR. She won her heat and I was really impressed with her effort,” said head coach April Wahlstrom.

In the 200 meters, Hay also placed 15th, crossing the line in 30.17. Dobbin placed 18th in 30.37 and Callender 32nd in 33.27.

Staying remarkably consistent, Hay, just a freshman, placed 14th in the 400 meters with a time of 70.44. Dobbin placed 16th in 72.47 and Callender placed 21st in 75.93.

Malin Anderson placed 7th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:44.04.

Three Cook County girls ran the 1600-meter (one mile) run. Louise Ramberg placed 16th in a time of 6:20.67; Cece Chmelik finished 24th in 6:49.71 and teammate Kylie Viren was a step behind in 25th in 6:49.66.

Annie Lynch threw the discus 42 feet, 3 inches to finish 39th. Annie threw the shot put 17 feet, 3 inches to finish 40th.

The 4×800-meter relay team of Malin Anderson, Sammie Garrity, Louise Ramberg and Kylie Viren placed 12th with a time of 11:50.49.

The young girls’ team was without several of its senior runners and throwers and finished 14th in the meet.
