Haussner qualifies for state in three events

Cook County High School senior track athlete Jack Haussner won two events and was second in another at the Section 7A track meet held at UMD on Thursday, May 30, qualifying for the Minnesota state track meet in all three.

Jack continued his dominance of the 110- meter high hurdles, running a lifetime best of 15.2. He was 1.1 seconds ahead of second place Derek Wester, who ran 16.23.

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the state meet.

In the 200 meters Jack sped to a 23.20, another lifetime best, to finish second to Mountain Iron Buhl’s (MIB) Jericho Peterson, who clocked 22.78.

Although he didn’t match his long jump of 20’- 11”, Jack’s leap of 20’- 1” was good enough to win the event. He beat Tyler Barneau of MEEA, who placed second with a jump of 19’- 9”.

Will Surbaugh ran a strong 1600 meters, finishing third with a time of 4:39.59. The two kids who finished ahead of Will are two of the best in the U.S. for their ages.

Geno Urbom, a Greenway/Nashwauk- Keewatin sophomore who won the state cross country championship last fall, ran 4:21.57. Urbom ran 4:32 in seventh grade to lead the nation for his age group. Second-place finisher, eighth-grader Cameron Stocke from Virginia, Minn. ran 4:24.33, certainly one of the fastest times (if not the fastest) in the U.S. for an eighth-grade boy.

Cook County had one girl qualify for the section meet, ninth-grader Molly LaVigne. LaVigne had a great race in the 400 meters, running 64:68 to place third; Kai Tower of Big Fork won with a time of 60:17. Molly also ran the 100 meters, taking 13th with a time of 13.82.

The Minnesota State Track & Field Championships will be held Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8, at Hamline University.
