A graveside memorial service with military rites for Harvey Melvin Anderson, 98, of Roslyn, S.D. and formerly of Grand Marais, will be held at a later date in Maple Hill Cemetery at Grand Marais.

Harvey died Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Strand Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn.

Harvey Melvin Anderson, son of Victor and Hilda (Rehn) was born June 6, 1919 at Stockholm, S.D. He was raised near Labolt, S.D. and later moved to Grand Marais, Minn. during the “dirty” 30s to become a lumberjack.

In 1942 he entered World War II and served in two major invasions, Africa and Anzio Beach. He was a decorated soldier and received a Purple Heart, good conduct medal, and two Bronze Stars. He was very proud of his military service and enjoyed talking about his experiences until the day he passed. To his family he is the greatest war hero ever.

After he was honorably discharged from the service in 1944 he returned to Hedstrom Lumber. He later was the maintenance man at Grand Marais School; he then became the head maintenance man at the North Shore Hospital and Care Center. Harvey worked there for 15 years up until he retired. He loved helping the residents at the home and his favorite story was when he would come to work and one person would shout, “Harvey’s here! Harvey’s here!” And that would echo through the halls.

Harvey was a master gardener and had a garden well into his 90s. He raised some of the biggest tomatoes and rutabagas on the North Shore and was always willing to share with his neighbors. He remained in his own home until August 2017 when he entered Strand Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn, to live out his days near his son Neil.

He was preceded in death by his parents Victor and Hilda Anderson, sisters Laura Kloster, Dorothy Foster, Gladys Rindahl, and Edith Anderson, nephews Gary and Ronald Rindahl, wife Connie (Iverson) Anderson, infant daughter Gloria, and sons Bruce and Nathan.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Mary Anderson of Waubay, S.D., and several nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers are all the staff at Strand Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn.

Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen have been entrusted with arrangements. www.Carlsenfh.com.
