Harbor plane lowers property value

Autumn has officially begun and with it the season of hope—the hope that the noise from the de facto “airport” in our harbor—and associated airspace (over my house and probably yours) will mercifully be coming to an end.

It would appear that two seasons of noise have fallen on deaf ears (so to speak). The mayor and council apparently aren’t listening, leaving the residential property owners in Grand Marais to seek redress from the County Board of Appeal and Equalization.

There is ample evidence to show that a house located near an airport is worth less than a “clone” located further away. Simply stated, non-aviation-related residential real property values drop the closer the property is to an airport.

I would suggest that we all show up at the next meeting of the County Board of Appeal and Equalization and argue that our current assessed valuation does not take into account the fact that we now live by an “airport” and that said valuation is, therefore, in need of adjustment.
