Happy Trails

Sugarbush Trail Association

The center of the Sugarbush trail system (Upper Picnic to Moose Fence and Onion River Road) was snowmobilegroomed Feb. 15. There is a packed base of 20-30 inches, with total snowfall for the season measuring 83 inches; 1 inch of snow fell during the last week. See www.sugarbushtrail.org for an update.

Gunflint Trail/Cook County Ridgeriders

The Grand Marais and Gunflint snowmobile trails couldn’t be in better condition. There is a solid 20-inch base or more virtually everywhere on the trail. In the downtown area there is a good base all the way to the west end of town on the access trail to those businesses headed toward Gunnar’s restaurant. We are asking city and private plowers to keep the access trail open of high banks to help reduce our trail maintenance time as there is a lot of snow in those areas.

The Gunflint Trail system had great raves and reviews last weekend from the Fun Run. The riders were very happy with the condition and traffic has picked up slightly but the colder weekday temperatures are keeping some riders off the trail. We expect light snow this weekend and warming temperatures. Traffic will pick up and there is still continued trail brush/clearing going on all week. Watch for the maintenance group and trail groomers out on the trail. For all the latest trail conditions, listen to the club’s recorded message at (218) 387-9392. Updated information on the Grand Portage trails may be had by calling the lodge at (218) 475-2401 or toll-free (800) 543-1384.

West End snowmobile trails

Superior Timber Wolves’ Feb. 13 report: “All trails groomed weekly. Tofte Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Leveaux groomed Tuesday. Gasco and Temperance Wednesday and Thursday. The warm weather is making the trails soft during the day, but they are freezing at night. Still lots of snow. More snow forecast for President’s weekend.”

Lutsen Area

Feb. 10 update: “We have reset both the skating lane and the single track with our Ginzu grooming equipment… Immaculate conditions. Perfect snow, perfect tracks, it does not get any better than this!” The entire system should ski excellent. See www.norpinetrails.org for a complete update and for the latest grooming reports.

Banadad Trails

The Banadad was re-groomed Feb. 7 and all trails are in great shape. Included are Lace Lake, Tim Knopp, Tall Pines and Seppalla. Average snow depth measures 25 inches.

Golden Eagle

Feb. 15 comments: “Last evening we groomed all the trails on the north side of Flour Lake, the north south link from Golden Eagle to Aspen Lake and the West End logging camp. Yesterday the temperature was in the mid-twenties, cooler than regions to the south. Today looks like it will be a little warmer but still with some cloud cover. We will keep on eye on the weather and finish our grooming on the south side of Flour Lake when temperatures get a little cooler, most likely late evening or early morning.” The Snowcat-packed trail base is 11-13 ½ inches; 65 inches of snow has fallen this season.
