At press time, local ski and snowmobile groups provided the following snow report:
Sugarbush Trail Association
March 9 update: Fresh snow did a good job of softening the classic tracks and allowing for some kick. We mixed the new snow into the skate deck and eliminated the icy conditions there as well. Get out early to avoid soft conditions. Packed base is 4-8 inches; total snowfall for the season is 42 inches.
See www.sugarbushtrail.org for the latest conditions.
Lutsen Area
March 9 report: All trails are open and freshly groomed. Temperatures expected to rise dramatically over the weekend making for late spring-like conditions.
See www.norpinetrails.org for a complete report.
Golden Eagle
March 9 update: There should be lots of sunshine the next couple of days so it will be a great weekend to be outside. Spring conditions will continue on the trails.

North Shore snowmobiling
General synopsis March 13, brought to you by snowmobiletrails.com: Rain and sleet Monday along Lake Superior. Snow farther inland mixed with sleet. Spur trails down to towns along immediate shore of Lake Superior are bare. Spring riding conditions; slush and water puddles on trails.
Sawbill Trail
March 13 update: Due to the rapid melting, the Sawbill ski trail is closed, probably for the season. It was fun to provide skiing when most of the state didn’t have snow. There is still quite bit of snow, but the trail is too soft to ski.
West End snowmobile trails
The Lutsen TrailBreakers report March 10: Rode from the intersection of the Beaver Trail and the Caribou Trail, up Caribou Trail to the Muhlberg Trail, across the Muhlberg to the Deer Trail and back across the Beaver Trail today. All trails were in good to excellent condition. Very few bare spots even down by Lake Superior. Light traffic on the trail today, so trails remain better than State Trail. Food and gas are still accessible at the shore.
Bearskin
Realistic assessment of snow conditions March 13: Our trails held up OK during the warm sunny days, but yesterday’s rain and strong winds were very hard on the snow. We’re opening a few of the trails on this side of the system for snowshoeing. You’ll still need a trail pass. Bear Cub, Poplar Creek, and Oxcart can be experienced right now on snowshoes, a fun and different way to get back into a Superior National Forest area that you can normally only traverse on skis in the winter.
