At press time, local ski and snowmobile groups provided the following snow report:
Sugarbush Trail Association
Feb. 14 update: We have more
snow here in Cook County than
anywhere else in Minnesota —
in fact, we are the only place
in Minnesota that has more
than a foot of snow! That deep
snow is just a short distance
inland, and great cross country
ski conditions can be found at
the end of the Sawbill Trail near
Tofte (at Sawbill Campground),
at Deer Yard Lake near Lutsen,
and up the Gunflint Trail.
However, trails closer to Lake
Superior have received less
snow, and conditions are
challenging and icy at the
only trailhead. Therefore,
in the interest of safety for
our nighttime skiers, the
organizers have decided to
cancel the President’s Weekend
Candlelight Ski.
See www.sugarbushtrail.org for
the latest conditions.
Lutsen Area
Groomer’s Feb. 10 report: Best
conditions are on Deeryard.
Hall Massie and all connectors
groomed. Lousy skiing on Hall
Massie in cedar-laden areas.
Tactical skiing on connector
from Caribou to Lutsen except
in some areas that are nice and
flat. Packed base is 1-6 inches;
total snowfall for the season is
19 inches.
See www.norpinetrails.org
for a complete report on ski
conditions.
North Shore snowmobiling
General Synopsis Feb. 10: 13-20
inches of snow in the woods in
Cook County…trails are in good
shape, grooming is in process.
Spur trails into towns on the
shore of Lake Superior are not
rideable. State trail north and
east of Silver Bay is in good
shape. Inland trails have more
snow than trails within two
miles of Lake Superior. Snow
cover increases drastically over
the hill from Lake Superior. As
a general rule there is almost
always more snow inland.

all the latest conditions and trail
recommendations.
Pincushion
Feb. 14 report: Somewhat
unconventional grooming…
West Overlook, upper and lower
Snowman, Canyon Curves, first
half of Pincushion Mountain,
last half of north advanced.
Basically, ski where it has been
groomed and you’ll be all good.
Skate lanes and classic tracks
are looking very good. Be
advised, there is still a fair bit of
tree debris mixed into the snow,
but it’s looking better every day.

Bearskin
Feb. 9 report: The warm-up last
weekend didn’t hurt us too
much. We lost a little over an
inch on the trail base and the
snow in the woods was reduced
by a couple of inches, but
conditions remain very good.
We were out earlier in the week
grooming and Golden Eagle
was out today on the other side
of the system using the snowcat
and renovator.

Gunflint Pines
Shari Baker reports on Feb.
14: All trails are open with the
exception of Amperage and
Magnetic Rock. The Pisten Bully
went out with the renovator
this morning. It did wonders to
the base, churning and fluffing
it laid a great track.
There is ample snow here in
the North Woods – we have
not had the melting many have
experienced in the Midwest.

latest news.
