At press time, local ski and snowmobile groups provided the following snow report:
Banadad Trails
Jan. 24 report: Lace Lake, Tim Knopp, Tall Pines and Seppalla were groomed on Jan. 24, with a trail base of 5.5 inches. Groomers report the east end of Banadad and adjoining trails are excellent for skiing. Snowshoe trails are also open.

Golden Eagle
Jan. 23 report: It has been snowing all day and as of 4 p.m. we have received 2.25 inches. We groomed all the trails on the north side of Flour Lake, except Deer Mouse, as well as Ride Run, Moose Pasture, Upper Beaver Dam and West End Logging Camp. The trails were all double tracked and although the snow covered the trail pretty fast, we were able to do a lot of leveling and packing. We’ll be out again tomorrow morning to re-groom.

Gunflint Pines
Shari Baker reports on Jan. 24 that ski conditions are excellent. “We’re out grooming and plan to have the system done by tomorrow. Amperage and Magnetic Rock trails remain closed, but hopefully soon we’ll get them going.”
See gunflintpines.com for the latest news.
Lutsen Area
Best conditions are on Deeryard; the lake side is still showing some rocks. Pioneer will ski but very poorly. We tried but none of Hall/Massie is groomable.
Packed base is only 1-3 inches; total snowfall for the season is a meager 15 inches. See www.norpinetrails.org for a complete report on ski conditions.
North Shore snowmobiling
Forrest at Hungry Jack Lodge says on Jan. 24: “Well, things are finally starting to pile up. We received about 4 inches of snow yesterday. We also had some accumulation over the weekend as well. We have about 14-18 inches on the ground. We finally have enough cover for the groomers to work with. All three of the Cook County Snowmobile Club groomers are out today.

Pincushion
All trails except Bed & Breakfast and East Overlook were groomed Jan. 24, and we have the best conditions of the year so far. Groomer’s choice, skate skiing, everything. Classic is great too!

Sugarbush Trail Association
Jan. 23 update: With new tracks and skating lane set, the upper Onion River Road continues to have the best conditions on the system. We attempted to reset tracks on the lower part of the road but had poor results because of the thin base. The rest of the system is being rolled and combed. There really isn’t enough new snow to set any tracks on anything but the Onion River Road.
See www.sugarbushtrail.org for the latest conditions.
West End snowmobiling
Steve Bragg reports on Jan. 24: “There is finally enough snow to groom the trails up in the hills away from the shore of Lake Superior. Some of our nicest and most scenic trails are groomed now and the state trail has been groomed as well. The services at the gas stations, resorts and restaurants are available although the snow conditions closer to the shore are marginal. With more snow on the way, things are looking up.”
