Happy Hikers will travel to Grand Portage State Park August 17

The Happy Hikers will have a choice to hike the nice, paved High Falls Trail or the more difficult Middle Falls Trail at Grand Portage State Park. We will split into two groups, based on which trail you would like to hike. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, on a leash.

The High Falls Trail is good for all abilities. On this hike, you’ll witness spectacular scenery through a lush northern birch and conifer forest. At the end of the trail, you’ll see Minnesota’s highest waterfall (120 feet), High Falls on the Pigeon River.

Difficult level: Easy

Approximate distance: 1.2 miles

The Middle Falls Trail is a rugged 4.5-mile round-trip hike. This challenging trail leads to a beautiful 20-foot waterfall. The trail passes over ridgetops, through heavily wooded forests and along the banks of the Pigeon River, with breathtaking views of the river gorge and Lake Superior. Allow three to four hours to fully appreciate the rugged beauty of this trail.

Difficult level: Difficult

Approximate distance: 4.5 miles

Each group will have lunch after the hike back at the picnic area at the Visitor Center.

Meet at the YMCA parking lot near the tennis courts at 9:00 am. We’ll carpool to Grand Portage State Park, 43 miles east of Grand Marais. Suggested donation for drivers: $3.

If you live east of Grand Marais and would like to meet us at Grand Portage State Park, be there around 9:45 a.m. Park in the Visitor Center parking lot. Let me know if you’re going to meet us there so we know to wait for you.

What to bring: Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking poles, water, and a sack lunch.

If it’s raining, the hike will be cancelled. For more information, contact Carol Morgen, 715-377-2526.
