On July 20 the Happy Hikers will hike the Woods Creek section of the Superior Hiking Trail. We will follow Woods Creek through birch, aspen, and ash. Sharp-edged red rock is Rhyolite. Trail then goes through dark spruces with old Man’s beard (a lichen) drooping from branches. SHT turns east and climbs into parklike aspen and birch forest, then a series of previously logged areas and a nice open field. Views of Lake Superior, Pincushion Mountain at first, and then wide view southwest of Pincushion, Maple Hill radio tower, and Sawtooth range. We will hike approximately 1.5 miles in, then turn around and go back. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.
Difficulty level: Moderate.
Approximate distance: 3 miles.
Meet at the YMCA parking lot near the tennis courts at 9:00 am. We’ll carpool to the trailhead. Take Hwy 61 east of Grand Marais and turn up Co. Rd. 58 (Lindskog Rd.). Go 0.8 miles to trailhead parking lot on left. Suggested donation for drivers: $3.
If you live east of Grand Marais and would like to meet us at the trailhead, be there around 9:15 a.m. Let me know if you’re going to meet us there so we know to wait for you.
What to bring: Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking poles, water, and a sack lunch.
If it’s raining, the hike will be cancelled.
