Happy Hikers next destination is Magnetic Rock trail

On August 11th, the Happy Hikers will travel 46 miles up the Gunflint Trail where we will hike across Larch Creek to Magnetic Rock. The trail passes through three major disturbances: the 1999 blowdown, 2002 prescribed burn, and the 2007 Ham Lake wildfire. Look for young jack pine and fire specialist woodpeckers. Magnetic Rock is a 60-foot rock with strong magnetic attraction. Bring your compass and test the magnetism. Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate, 3 miles.

Afterwards, we will head into Tuscarora Lodge & Outfitters to use their bathrooms and picnic area for lunch.

Meet at the YMCA parking lot near the tennis courts at 9:00 am. We’ll carpool to the Magnetic Rock Trailhead, 46 miles up the Gunflint Trail. Suggested donation for drivers: $3. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, on a leash.

WHAT TO BRING:

Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking sticks, water, and a sack lunch.

If it’s raining, the hike will be canceled. For more information, contact Carol Morgen, 715-377-2526.
