Happy Hiker to hike the Centennial Trail

On August 24 the Happy Hikers will travel 40 miles up the Gunflint Trail to the Kekekabic Trailhead where the Centennial Trail begins. This 3.3-mile interpretive loop follows a historic railroad bed. It is the site of the ill-fated Paulsen Mine. Hikers will be able to see the original mine test pits from the 1890’s. The Centennial Trail was developed to honor the Superior National Forest’s 100th anniversary in 2009. An interpretive guide to the 14 stops will be available. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, on a leash.

Difficulty level: Difficult (rough, uneven surfaces, one steep section with no stairs).

Approximate distance: 3.3 miles

Meet at the YMCA parking lot near the tennis courts at 9:00 am. We’ll carpool up the Gunflint Trail to the trailhead. Suggested donation for drivers: $3. After the hike, we will travel a short distance back to Tuscarora Outfitters where we will have use of their restrooms and picnic area.

What to bring: Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking poles, water, and a sack lunch.

If it’s raining, the hike will be cancelled. For more information, contact Carol Morgen, 715-377-2526.
