Darwin had it right when he determined that the “fittest” tend to survive. To be “fit” does not mean be selfish, non-loving brutes. Love, nurture and cooperation are advantageous for survival, maybe because of efficiency of resources. Humans evolved with an inclination for love, compassion, as have other animal species as observed where the parents gently tend their young and help each other. Survival depends on it. And we play.
At my house a Charlie Brown Christmas tree leans in the corner. Beneath it a cotton ball snowman and a wooden Norwegian troll stand outside a stable where cardboard parents gaze fondly at baby Jesus in a little basket. Nearby are Santa’s reindeer who rest after a grueling journey. They have been lovingly groomed and fed by the nisse.
It is a part of happy fantasy, not faith. And to all, a Happy New Year!
