Hansel & Gretel to be presented by Lyric Opera of the North and Sawtooth Elementary

Lyric Opera of the North is coming to Grand Marais! In partnership with Opera for the Young, the company will present an adaptation of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel at Cook County Schools on October 21. A chorus of students from Sawtooth Elementary will appear onstage, performing right alongside Lyric Opera of the North’s professional artists.

Opera for the Young and Lyric Opera of the North are teaming up for the first time to bring live, professional opera to elementary school audiences along the North Shore. All productions are fully staged, sung in English and adapted especially for children. Students appear onstage in chorus and cameo roles. Opera for the Young annually presents 200 performances, reaching 80,000 children every school year throughout Wisconsin, northern Illinois, Iowa and eastern Minnesota. Further information about Opera for the Young is available at www.operafortheyoung.org.

The performance is an adaptation of the classic fairy tale. Does that little house look good enough to eat? Beware! Students will learn about courage, love, magic and the triumph of good over evil as a brave sister and brother outwit a mean old hag.

The performance will take place in Cook County High School’s varsity gym at 9:00 a.m. Members of the community are welcome to attend. The performance lasts about 45 minutes and is followed by a Q&A session with the professional artists.

This performance is made possible by a generous grant from the Cook County Schools Education Foundation.
