The Grand Marais mayor traditionally lights the Christmas tree in downtown Grand Marais after the holiday parade. This year Mayor Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux was out of town on the day of the parade, so he initiated a contest to offer the honor of lighting the big Christmas tree to a local child. Mayor Arrowsmith DeCoux received a number of entries and selected the one from Hailey Anderson.

Hailey is 5 years old and in kindergarten. Her essay answer to the mayor’s question is on the right.

Winning Cutest Entry honors was Joy & Co., making winter long johns look stylish.

And Best Holiday Spirit went to the colorfully decorated kayak float of Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply.
