On Friday, June 30, the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway Committee, the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe, and the Superior National Forest unveiled a new Swamper Lake 3-panel kiosk, located halfway up the Gunflint Trail.

The colorful kiosk shows the locations of more than ten lakes and gives their Ojibwe names and stories behind the names.

Consultation and input by the 1854 Treaty Authority and the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe during the development of the content ensured that the story of the lake names cultural significance was told.

The lakes on the kiosk include: Hivernant Lake, Lake Saganaga, Lake Ogishkumuncie, Gillis Lake, Gunflint Lake (Biiwaanagosaaga’igan), Hungry Jack Lake, Flour Lake (Bakwezhigani-saaga’igan), Brule River (Wiisaakode-ziibi) and Swamper Lake.

Following the unveiling there was a reception and gathering at the mid-trail Schapp Fire Hall.
