Gunflint Trail Fire Department open house set for Dec. 6

’Tis the season to give back to those who have supported you. Thus the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting an open house Christmas party at the Schaap Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 3 to 7 p.m.

The Schaap Center is one phase of an ambitious capital investment project that resulted in the construction of two community centers, a fire hall, a cold storage facility and expansion of bathroom facilities at the three fire hall locations in the Gunflint Trail Fire District. The $850,000 project was supported by nearly $500,000 in donations from the Gunflint Trail community.

“We see this event as an opportunity to say thank you to our friends and neighbors who answered the call when we asked them for their support,” said GTVFD Fire Chief Jim Morrison. “Frankly we were all quite overwhelmed by their generosity.”

Big Bear Lodge on Poplar Lake (formerly Old Northwoods Lodge) will be providing a variety of fresh hot pizzas. Fire department members will supply the appetizers, hors d’oeuvres, sweets and desserts. There will also be a variety of hot and cold beverages.

The Gunflint Trail Fire District is over 60 miles long and covers 200 square miles. It is geographically comprised of five separate areas: Mid-Trail, Gunflint Lake, Seagull/Sag, Greenwood Lake and Twin Lakes. The two community centers have given the residents locations to gather for events that have helped unify the entire fire district into one grand community. The new fire hall and cold storage facility enabled the fire department to upgrade their vehicles and equipment to better serve the area.

There is no charge for the event. All families, friends and guests are encouraged to stop by for a bite to eat, refreshments and an opportunity to share some good cheer this Christmas season.
