The Gunflint Trail has historically been a favorite haunt of artists. The Pines, the view from Honeymoon Bluff, interesting cabins and boat houses, and of course rivers and streams, have been immortalized on canvas for decades. However this summer there is a new incentive for artists and art lovers to head up the Trail—a Plein Air Celebration and Show.
Like the Gunflint Trail, this celebration is different than the average Plein Air— painting outdoor—event. The Gunflint Plein Air Celebration lasts all summer long and has paintings on display now through October 15. Stop by Trail Center or Bearskin Lodge to see the beautiful artwork already on exhibit. You may be disappointed—many of the wonderful works have already been sold. But more are being completed every day, in five categories: water (rain, falls, rivers, and lakes), landscape, wildlife, buildings and people.
The celebration culminates in an artists’ reception and sale on October 23. The place of the reception is yet to be determined. Organizer Sarah Hamilton said the place depends on how many paintings are submitted.
There is no fee for artists. They must sign in at Trail Center Lodge between 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday. There are special incentives for artists, such as free coffee, treats, discounted lodging or boat rentals. Artists are invited to paint on the premises of several lodges. There is also the opportunity to network—casually, of course—with other artists at a Friday and Sunday morning artists’ get-together at Trail Center. Stop by between 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. to catch up with old friends and make new ones. And find out about exciting challenges such as the July 16 “spin the artist” event.
Participating Gunflint businesses are Clearwater Lodge, Golden Eagle Lodge, Bearskin Lodge, Windigo Lodge, Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B, Old Northwoods Lodge, Moosehorn Lodge, Hungry Jack Lodge, Gunflint Lodge, Nor’Wester Lodge, and Trail Center.
