My husband Dave and I live up the Gunflint Trail and drive into town nearly every day. In doing so we pass the Gunflint Horse Park (there is a painted sign identifying it as such). I would guess this “park” has been in existence for about the past six years and in those years we have seen horses in the park on maybe three occasions. One of those times was during the Cook County Fair when a few horses were in the “park” playing horse hockey or something exciting like that.
My questions are, whose idea was it to build the horse park and what was its intended purpose? This horse park is surrounded by metal fencing, has several log hitching posts and even has a metal grandstand that I doubt anyone has ever sat on. It also has some large plastic barrels perhaps to be used for barrel racing?
I question the common sense of those who thought this was in any way a good use of taxpayer money. I asked a couple of people about it and was told it was built with grant money. Where does grant money come from if not out of the taxpayers’ pockets? Unless I am missing something, this looks like just another example of wasteful spending of our taxpayer dollars. Oh, how refreshing it would be if common sense would be common and not rare in our elected officials on every level – city, county, state and national.
