Despite foggy weather, the first Gunflint Hills – Lions Club Three Person Scramble Tournament on Sunday, September 13 was a great success. Over 60 golfers turned out to play 18 holes and take a chance at a $10,000 hole-in-one.

The fog made the hole-in-one contest especially difficult, with Golf Course Manager Mike Kunshier helping golfers find the hole, calling “Fire away!” as contestants came up to the tee. No one made a hole-in-one to win the $10,000, but everyone had fun trying. The Grand Marais Lions sponsored the $10,000 hole and plan to do it again next fall.

Tournament winners were Carline Gresczyk and her sons, Todd Gervais and Greg Gresczyk, who finished the tournament three under par. In second place were Chris LaVigne, Jay Tice, and Scott Steinbach with two under par. In third place were Jed Smith, Andrew Smith and Steve Waver, one under par.

Kunshier said he was very pleased with the turnout for this first tournament and expressed thanks to the many volunteers who helped out— Gene Malner, Irene Malner, Ada Hill, Nancy Smith, and Karen Medlin. He also said thanks should go out to the many local businesses that contributed prizes for the tournament.

Grand Marais Lion Andrew Smith was one of the organizers and he, too, said the event was terrific. He stressed that this is the first annual. “Start practicing now and come try it next year. Next year it will be bigger and better!”
