Gun seizure at Pigeon River border station




On September 27, a 66-year-old Texas man was referred for a vehicle examination at the Pigeon River Port of Entry. He declared no weapons or firearms when asked at the primary inspection lane.

Despite his declaration, officers found a loaded 9-mm pistol and magazine in a bag behind the driver’s seat. He was arrested for smuggling and the case was turned over to the Canada Border Services Agency Criminal Investigation Division.

The traveller was released on a U.S. $300 recognizance to appear in court on November 22, 2016 in Thunder Bay. A Canadian $2,000 penalty was assessed and he paid for the return of his vehicle. The handgun and a total of 13 rounds in a 17-round magazine were subsequently seized prior to his return to the U.S.
