Concerts from Behind the Taconite Curtain is pleased to announce a Fingerstyle Guitar Masters Weekend at Bluefin Bay Resort in Tofte April 15 – 16. The weekend of workshops and concerts features award-winning guitarists Phil Heywood and Steve Kaul. All profits from the weekend will go to WTIP Community Radio in Grand Marais.
The event kicks off Friday night with local favorite Gordon Thorne playing a few sets of blues and hillbilly music in the Bluefin downstairs pub. Workshops begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with Thorne’s “Fingerstyle Foundations — An Introduction to the Music of Mississippi John Hurt.” Steve Kaul will discuss his unique approach to open tunings in a workshop beginning at 11:15. And at 1 p.m., Phil Heywood demonstrates right-hand technique, paying special attention to the thumb and how players such as Leadbelly, Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Joseph Spence and others used it in their playing.
The workshops are open to all (even for non-guitarists, learning about these techniques offers interesting insights into an American art form) and are $30 each or $50 for all three.
The Saturday evening concert features Steve Kaul and Phil Heywood at 7:30 p.m. in the upstairs dining area, which will be transformed into an intimate concert setting in which to see two of the best fingerstyle guitarists on the scene today. Tickets are $15 and available at the door.
