Cook County Higher Education’s next guest lecture series is First, Catch a Rabbit
on July 6, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, with refreshments. Ralph Latham will present the topic and lead the discussion, which will center on writing and writing skills for all genres. We learn to write by writing, by reading the writers who have mastered the craft, by making friends with our dictionaries, and by playing mindful games with words.
In this interactive presentation, Latham will offer up some recipes for success. He encourages people to bring their favorite rulebooks and what they have learned about writing to add breadth and depth to the discussion. To encourage writing practice, Latham will offer rules and riddles, laughter at language, plus fun games with friendly words.
Latham, a Cook County resident, is a retired community college English professor who moved to the North Shore and began a second career writing for the Cook
County News-Herald.
He has since retired from this career, but writing is something he will do all of his life.
Latham likes to quote Donald Hall (Writing Well, 8th
edition)
who claims, “Writing resembles athletic skill; it comes more naturally to some people than to others, but it always and only improves with practice.”
The guest lectures are held at Cook County Higher Education’s North Shore Campus, located at 300 West 3rd Street. The events are free and open to the public, although donations are welcome. TheJuly 6 event is sponsored by the Grand Marais State Bank, the Lake Superior Trading Post, Birchbark Books and Gifts, and Johnson’s Foods. Paula Sundet Wolf expressed appreciation and added, “Please thank them for their contribution.”
