Following a highly successful high school basketball career, Lily Gruber-Schulz recently announced she will take her game and academic abilities to Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario where she will play for the Thunderwolves.
“I’m extremely excited that Lily has chosen Lakehead University to continue her education and join the Thunderwolves,” said women’s Head Coach John Kreiner. “Lily has tremendous amount of upside, versatility and passion for the game. She’s experienced playing every position, is a hard worker, has a high basketball IQ, and most importantly, has character. Lily fits in with our team right from the get go and I look forward to working with her for the next five years.”
Gruber-Schulz averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds with 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks per game for the Vikings this past season. The 6’0” guard/forward shot 47 percent from the floor and 71 percent from the free throw line.
In addition to basketball, Gruber-Schulz was a starter on CCHS volleyball team that went undefeated throughout the regular season and played at state. She is also on the student council and maintains a 3.78 grade point average.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about my plans for college, and after my visit to Thunder Bay in February, I knew Lakehead was the best choice for me,” said Gruber-Schulz, who was being recruited by several colleges.
“It’s been an honor and joy to work with Lily through this basketball season,” said Viking Coach Kelly Senty. “Her decision to attend Lakehead and join the Thunderwolves family complements her aspirations as an athlete. Having a Cook County graduate play at the next level is exciting and the girls here at Cook County are already planning a trip to Thunder Bay to watch and support her.
“Lily will find success in all that she does and I look forward to watching her continue her athletic and academic career at Lakehead,” said Senty.
