Gresczyk rink victorious in first half of curling season

There has been some exciting action at the Cook County Curling Club in the first half of the curling season. The Pete Gresczyk rink concluded an undefeated first half season with an 8-5 victory over the Brian Smith rink in the first half playdowns.

Gresczyk made an awesome triple split that gave him a 3-point lead in the seventh end. Local curler Ron Gervais Sr. said in his 40-plus years of curling this is only the second time he has witnessed such a shot.

Gresczyk, with Vice Ron Gervais Sr. skipping (calling the strategy), second Carline Gresczyk and alternate leads Greg Gresczyk and Marshall Pedersen, completed an undefeated regular season with a 6-0 record. On the way they defeated the Andrew Smith and Rory Smith rinks prior to defeating Brian Smith (Skip), Bruce (Baggers) Johnson (Third), Mike Littfin (Second), and Mark Hommerding (Lead) in the finals.

The Gresczyk rink will play for the 2013-2014 club Open League Championship in March against the winner of the second half schedule which begins play on January 6, 2014.

The club also has two Bonspiels in 2014, a mixed bonspiel February 21 – 23 and the Charles J. Futterer Memorial Open to be played March 7 -9. Spectators are always welcome to come watch the curlers and see what it’s all about.

The Cook County Curling Club holds its season in two halves, shutting down over the holidays, with the winner of each half competing in the finals. Prospective curlers still have time to join a team prior to the beginning of the second half. Dues are on a per half basis.

With a Northland rink (Duluth) representing the United States in the Winter Olympics, curling will once again be in the spotlight. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about the game that is enjoyed by so many in our community.
