The Cook County Tennis Association (CCTA), in partnership with the Cook County Community YMCA, completed its first tennis camp last week on the Grand Marais courts. The three-day camp was a rousing success based upon the enthusiastic response from the both the participants and instructors.

A total of 18 people attended, evenly split between juniors and adults. To encourage participation, the entry fees for the juniors were substantially reduced thanks to a grant from the Arrowhead Cooperative Operation Round Up program.

Instruction was provided by Travel Tennis Camps (TTC), a Minnesota organization that specializes in putting on tennis camps in towns throughout Minnesota during the summer. They have been doing this for 16 years but this is their first camp in Grand Marais.

The tennis camp includes 15 hours of high quality instruction on all aspects of the game of tennis, taught through a series of on-court drills. The instructors were led by Scott Hansen, the head women’s tennis coach at the College of St. Benedict and his staff of four current or former college players.

Given the success of the camp, the CCTA and YMCA will be discussing the possibility of repeating it in 2015.
