Senior guard Breana Peterson, back from a three-week illness, led the Vikings in scoring against the Silver Bay Mariners in a home game played Friday, January 24.

“Breana is back and it really gave us a lift! She scored 21 points and had four three-pointers. That was huge for us,” said Head Coach Mitch Dorr.

Dorr also cited the play of freshman forward Emily Jacobsen, noting that she “led us with 7 rebounds and continues to work hard for us.”

Other Vikings to score were Lily Gruber-Schulz with 9, Essance Haines with 7, Hannah Toftey with 2, Jami Sjogren with 2 and Jacobsen with 1 point.

Coach Dorr has been consistently trying to find the best rotation for his young team.

“We are getting a consistent rotation now with starters Breana, Lily, Trace, Suzy, and Emily, with Essance being the first off the bench,” said Dorr.

And while the team has a couple of juniors and seniors, the bench is deep with sophomores and a lot of freshmen, all who are seeing playing time.

“If we are up big or down big, you will see the younger group get more and more playing time. We need to compete on a daily basis while also preparing for the future,” Dorr said.

“I thought it was a great team effort with all 14 players on the squad getting playing time. Our starters obviously paved the way for us today. They did a great job in the first half setting the tone. That comes from having a good senior captain on the floor in Breana,” Dorr said.

The Tuesday, January 28 game against Mesabi East was cancelled because Mesabi cancelled school due to the cold weather.
