Great season start for North Shore Bantam Hockey

Cook County has five players on the 2010-11 Silver Bay Cook County Bantam Hockey team: ninth grade forward Thomas Anderson, ninth grade defender Ben Kroska, eighth grade forward Lars Scannell, eighth grade defender Jamie Wick, and eighth grade goalie Daniel Ahrendt. The team is off to a furious start, having won all of its first four games, scoring a total of 29 goals and leaving their opponents with only four goals to show for their efforts.

The team has played Ashland Wisconsin (12 to 1), the Duluth Lakers (4 to 1), Proctor (9 to 1), and most recently Duluth East (4 to 1).

Thomas Anderson has emerged as a team leader, centering one of the three forward lines and scoring at least one point in each of the four games, including the opening salvo in Sunday’s most recent game against rival Duluth East. Lars Scannell also has proven his scoring talents at left wing, having two games with multiple goals and assists, including two goals in the Sunday’s 4-1 defeat of Duluth East.

Ben Kroska, Jamie Wick, and goalie Daniel Ahrendt (who is now 3-0 in goal) each play an instrumental role in what can only be described as a smothering defense—virtually shutting opponents down in each of these first four games. Thehard work and gritty play of these aggressive and talented defenders is what allows the team’s offense to go to work and light up the scoreboard.

The Bantam team, which is made up of a full roster of 13-and 14-year -olds from Cook County, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors, is very well coached by Wade LeBanc and Bruce Small. The season just started, so there will be many opportunities to see these local boys go to work during games in Silver Bay. Put January 14 – 16 and March 18 – 20 on your calendars, so you remember to make the trip down the shore to watch the team play in their two local tournaments.
