Our young cross country team really showed their abilities at Proctor on the 20th of October.
We stacked our junior high girls’ team with all of our junior high runners and they came in with an almost perfect score. Isabel Schottenbauer (14:03) came in 1st place followed by Emily Seipke (14:48) in 2nd, with Kate Walsberg (14:56) in 3rd place, Louise Ramberg (15:03) in 4th place and Robin Henrikson (16:05) in 13th place.
This young group of girls has shown much enthusiasm throughout the season and they have a work ethic to go with it. It will be fun to watch this group evolve over the next several years. Malin Anderson, Amelia Roth, Hazel Oberholtzer, Ellen Callender, Abbey Stoddard, and Chloe Blackburn are all following suit with a great work ethic and it was fun to watch the improvements of these runners during the season.
JC Holman finished in 8th place for the junior high boys’ 2-mile with a time of 14:04. Holman was followed by Tate Crawford (15:21) in 19th, Jron Tamanaha (15:27) in 20th and Jack Willis (15:47) in 28th place. Levi Nelson, Lynden Blomberg, Doran Acero, and Ryan Bilben all finished their season with a strong race and a great finish to a season of getting faster and stronger.
We had several stand out performances at this meet. Ruby Walsberg was our 3rd varsity runner. She took 50 seconds off her best time and ran 23:57. Paige Gries also ran one of her best races of the season pushing herself all the way to the finish with a time of 26:56. Lucy Callender, Daphne Lacina and Hazel Babcock packed together and kept each other moving for much of the race as they pushed and pulled each other.
Noah Smith finished in 11th place for the boys’ varsity race. Leif Anderson had a breakthrough day by shaving almost 30 seconds off of his time and breaking 20 minutes. Anderson finished in 19:53. Thatcher Sunday also set a new season-best time of 20:17. Andy Kern also had a break-through day and set a new season-best of 22:27. Not only did he run faster but he raced well, constantly striving to pass the next group of runners in front of him. Harvey Parker cut 20 seconds off of his best time and he ran 23:46. Isak Terrill shaved another minute off of his time and finished in 28:20. What a way to end the season!
Next week we will see if we have any runners who will be competing at the State Meet on November 7 at St. Olaf College.
When I get to this point of the season it is fun to reflect on all of the runners and think about where they started and where they ended. It is always great to see the kids come away with being more in shape, having new buddies, and most importantly being proud of what they accomplished and realizing that their body can do more than they thought it could.
Come cheer on the Vikings at the section meet on Thursday, October 29 at Cloquet Country Club.
