The first ever “Best in Snow” skijor race on Saturday, March 1 was a huge success. Organizer Cathy Quinn wasn’t sure what to expect for the inaugural event so she was very pleased with the turnout at the George Washington Pines ski trail.

Fifteen teams took to the trail on a cold, but sunny afternoon for twomile and four-mile races. Friends and family and some curious community members gathered to cheer them on or to enjoy snacks and hot chocolate by the bonfire.

There were a number of local racers, but the event drew some skijor teams from Shoreview, Minnesota and making it an international race, from St. Marie, Ontario.

For anyone who doesn’t know, skijoring is a winter sport where a person on cross-country skis is pulled by a dog. The “Best in Snow” skijor race is a fundraiser for Go Dog North Shore and is geared towards experienced skijorers as well as beginners.

Go Dog North Shore is a new nonprofit organization based in Grand Marais that aims to promote healthy and active human and dog relationships. Contact Cathy Quinn at (218) 370-9494 or quinn@boreal.org for more information about Go Dog North Shore or about next year’s “Best in Snow Skijor Race.”
