For the past ten months Go Dog North Shore (GDNS), a local 501 (c)(3) non-profit, has been raising funds to construct a new purpose-built dog park within the City of Grand Marais. The park will consist of a one-acre wooded space with trails and a six-foot high fence that will provide residents and visitors a place to exercise and socialize their dogs safe from predators, traps and traffic. We knew when we started this endeavor that there was support for this public park, but we didn’t expect how quickly and enthusiastically the support would come! Since last May when the Grand Marais City Council gave (GDNS) the approval to raise funds for the park we have received contributions from 216 individuals and businesses as well as a $10,000 grant from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation. In addition, we recently were notified by the First & Second Thrift Store that GDNS received a profit share in the amount of $8,426 as a result of seven volunteers who designated their hours to our organization. We would like to sincerely thank the following First & Second Thrift Store volunteers for their community service and for supporting GDNS: Barb Backlund, Barb Heideman, Deb Roach, Jan Smith, Cheryl Turner, Paige Waalkens, Pat Zankman.
First & Second is always in need of volunteers. We hope you’ll consider lending your time and subsequent support to one of the many worthy local non-profits of your choosing! Call the store at 218-387-1826 to find out more. In closing, thank you to our financial contributors, big and small, as well as the Grand Marais City Council and staff for your vision and dedication to create this community space. While we are still working towards our fundraising goal, we are confident that we will have a park for us to enjoy with our dogs in the summer of 2022!
