The Cook County Community Fund, an affiliate fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, will host a grant writing workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Cook County Higher Education Building in Grand Marais.
The workshop presenter is Jim Filby Williams, director of community philanthropy at the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation overseeing the Community Foundation’s grants and scholarships program. Filby Williams, a graduate of Yale University, has more than a decade of experience as a nonprofit manager including five years as executive director of Animal Allies Humane Society where his fundraising accomplishments included funding of a $4 million animal shelter and clinic, creation of a $1 million endowment, and a quadrupling of the organization’s annual operating budget. Filby Williams assists the advisory board of the Cook County Community Fund with their annual spring grant round.
The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation promotes private giving for the public good. The Community Foundation is a permanent community endowment, built by gifts from hundreds of individuals and organizations. Guided by a 12-member board of volunteer civic leaders, the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations and to individuals for scholarships and provides leadership on important community initiatives in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Since its inception in 1983, they have distributed over $37 million and currently hold over 310 different funds, each with its own charitable purpose.
The workshop will focus on how to craft an effective grant proposal. The event is free for staff and volunteers of area nonprofit organizations. Participants should register by calling (218) 387-2584 or emailing tbluesnow@hotmail.com.
