Granny gets an iPad Mini

Picking lilacs is one of my favorite summer activities, and I did that today. Planting flower seeds is another, and I did that last week. Setting up an iPad mini is not one of my favorite chores. However, that’s what I’ve been doing for the past four months.

Mid-February, to be exact, I received a gift that has kept me busy ever since. My husband bought an iPad Mini for me, and suddenly I was thrown into the world of technology.

Don’t get me wrong. This device has wonderful features. It’s just that figuring out how to access and use them has been daunting. I usually engage the help of an expert, but this time decided to deal with it myself.

In a very efficient manner, I ordered an iPad cover and a screen protector and even installed them, no problem. So far, so good.

The next step was enrollment and registration. Unfortunately, I had turned the whole contraption off and when I tried to open it, used the wrong password too many times. Suddenly, I was locked out of my iPad. Having no idea how to remedy this situation, I admitted failure and found the Apple Help website.

I reached a very helpful person who was unsuccessful at helping me. Nothing he did worked, and he suggested I go to my nearest Apple store. “That’s a hundred miles away,” I wailed.

He handed me over to another Rep who did manage to unlock my iPad. We proceeded to get registered. The task was halfway finished when I felt a headache coming on and my eyes blurred, so I told my helpful Apple representative that I simply didn’t have it in me to continue and needed a break. We would finish tomorrow, he promised.

Here’s the part where I admit failure. I didn’t get back to my iPad mini until this past week. I found every excuse in the world to do anything but open the device. I bought a book, iPad Mini User Guide for Seniors, and it looked helpful, but I only reached page 35. I told myself I would work on my iPad each day on vacation. I didn’t. I became a world class procrastinator.

Finally, last week when my daughter visited, I asked her for help. She sat down and within 20 minutes, navigated the choppy sea of technology and solved all my problems.

I can’t thank her enough.
