Grandma’s Marathon results



Elisha Barno was in his usual place at the 47th running of Grandma’s Marathon when he crossed the finish line in first with a time of two hours, nine minutes, and 14 seconds at the 47th running of Grandma’s Marathon, taking his fifth win.

Barno, 37, led four other Kenyans who swept the top five places on a day that was cool and nearly perfect for fast times. In all, 39 men broke two hours and twenty minutes, many of those under the two-hour eighteen-minute standard to qualify for the Olympic trials. Women finishing in two hours thirty seven minutes or less qualified for the women’s Olympic marathon trials.

Meanwhile, two-time women’s champion Dakota Lindwurm of Eagan was beaten by first-time marathoner Lauren Hagans, who trains in Flagstaff, Arizona. Hagans ran two hours, twenty-five minutes, and 55 seconds to run the fourth fastest time ever. Lindwurm, who led through 19 miles, was one minute behind Hagans at the finish.

Duluthian legend Kara Goucher’s record in the half marathon was taken down by Maggie Montoya of Boulder, Colorado. Maggie broke the finish line in one hour, nine minutes, 26 seconds.

Joel Reichow of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, won the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon with a time of one hour, two minutes and 30 seconds.

Aaron Pike won the men’s wheelchair race for the fifth time, and Jenna Fesemyer took the lady’s wheelchair title. Both wheelers came from Champaign, Illinois.

In the wheelchair duo division, Sean McQuaid pushed rider Riley Pathman to a new Guinness World Record by finishing in two hours, thirty-five minutes, and 26 seconds. The previous mark was two hours, forty minutes.

Steven Bugarin of Hammond, Indiana, placed first in the marathon nonbinary division with a time of two hours, fifty minutes, and 29 seconds to take home $500. Jonah Grant, 29, of Madison, Wisconsin, won the nonbinary title for the Garry Bjorklund half marathon with a time of one hour, twelve minutes, and 59 seconds to win $150. The top three places in the non-binary marathon and half marathon were paid cash prizes.

Overall it was a great day for running as 6690 (3933 men, 2744 women, and 10 nonbinary) finishers completed the marathon with an average finishing time of 4:13:53. All told, 14,166 people completed either the half or full marathon at the 47th running of Grandma’s Marathon Saturday, June 17.

The half marathoners who started an hour and a half earlier than the marathon runners enjoyed temperatures in the mid 50’s—perfect for running- while the marathoners experienced temperatures in the mid-60s and somewhat warmer for slower runners. About 200 people sought medical attention for heat-related stress at the medical tents at the finish line, typically because they didn’t take enough fluids early in the race. But overall, runners looked good as they finished, and many PRs were set on this day.

In other marathon news Dorothy Spencer, 90, was awarded the 2023 Scott A. Keenan Founder’s Award. Spencer was integral to the race’s start when there was no budget, and volunteers did all of the work. She has contributed to the race for most of the 47 years it has existed as a volunteer. Dorothy also competed in the William 5 K. race on Friday and ran 43:53.

Local marathon finishers

Ian Holmen, 33, Gerand Marais, ran 2:43:05 to place 294th. Tyler Lange, 34, Grand Marais, placed 1330 in 3:21:21. Jane Asa, 39, Grand Marais, placed 2092 with a time of 3:41:19. Riley Wahlers, 22, Grand Marais, placed 2492 with a finish time of 3:50:07. Rose Smith, 34, Grand Marais, finished 2772 in 3:54:41. Keith Anderson, 41, Grand Portage, placed 5162 with a time of 4:55:18.

Garry Bjorklund half marathon

There were 7488 finishers (3017 men, 4459 women, eight non-binary) that finished the Garry Bjorklund half-marathon (13.1 miles) in an average of 2:14:47.

Anton Moody, 44, Grand Marais, placed 1684 in 1:52:13. Paul Spry, 48, Grand Portage, placed 2520 in 1:59:23. Ellen Callender, 21, Grand Marais, placed 4459 with a time of 2:22:41. Alyssa Morinville, 28, Grand Marais, placed 4258 in 3:20:54.
