Grand Portage Tribal Council election is June 12





 

 

The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will hold its 2012 general election on Tuesday, June 12. Polls open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. at the Old Log Community Building. Two people are running for the Reservation Tribal Council (RTC) committeeman seat, Robert J. Hull and Marie Spry.

The candidates are running for the seat currently held by William “Bill” Myers.

The Tuesday, April 3, 2012 primary election had very tight results, leading to a recount. At the closing of the polls on April 3, Spry was in the lead with 132 votes. Hull was in second with 110 votes and Myers was third with 109 votes.

A recount was held on April 9 with a slightly different count but the same results. Spry remained in the lead with 133 votes. Hull was second with 116 votes and Myers was third with 111.

Spry and Hull are now on the ballot for Tuesday’s election.

The election is being held in accordance with Minnesota Chippewa Tribe ordinances. Enrolled members of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa elect the Tribal Council officers.

The Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council is the governing body of the reservation. Current members of the Tribal Council are Chair Norman Deschampe; Vice-Chair John Morrin; Secretary- Treasurer April McCormick; Councilman Arvid Dahl; and Councilman William “Bill” Myers.

The council oversees health care, social services, education, jobs, housing, public safety, and more.
