Grand Portage State Park visitors are looking forward to completion of the new 5,800 square foot visitor center at the park, however there is some inconvenience during construction. Anyone wanting to hike the trail to High Falls, Minnesota’s highest waterfall, will only be able to do so on the weekend. The park will only be open on weekends, with limited parking space until work on the park’s parking area is completed.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) decided to close the park because of concerns for visitor safety.
Park manager Rick Novitsky said he regretted any inconvenience caused by the weekday closure and said he hoped the work would be completed soon. An announcement will be made when the park reopens weekdays.
The new facility is being constructed because of a partnership among the DNR, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), and the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe. The new building will replace a 30-year old doublewide trailer that had served as the park office. Novitsky said the park hopes to be in the new building by Memorial Day 2010.
