Grand Portage special election Feb. 8

Grand Portage residents will be heading to the polls on Tuesday, February 8 to vote in a special general election. On the ballot are Rob Hull and April (Clearwater-Day) McCormick, running for the Reservation Tribal Council (RTC) secretarytreasurer seat and Arvid Dahl and Christina “Tina” Deschampe, running for a committeeman II seat.

Hull, who was elected to the RTC committeeman II seat in March 2010, is currently serving as acting secretary-treasurer.

Three Grand Portage Band members ran for the secretary treasurer-seat in the December 2010 primary and the ballot was narrowed to Hull and McCormick.

There were 12 citizens on the primary ballot for the committeeman II seat and that election narrowed the contest to Dahl and Deschampe.

The election is held in accordance with Minnesota Chippewa Tribe ordinances. Polls open are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Grand Portage Community Building.

The Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council is the governing body of the reservation. The enrolled members of the band elect the tribal council officers. The council oversees health care, social services, education, jobs, housing, public safety, and more.
