Above: If you ever wanted to know how people colored wool back in the 1790s, Allan Nielsen “the dye guy” could tell you. Nielsen had an intricate explanation for how each color came to be on wool, but he said that when it came to dying other fabrics, one had to start over and use other methods to achieve similar or same colors on material. Left: Called “The House Band,” these gentlemen have been coming to the Rendezvous separately for about 15 years where they meet and gather their talents to form a ridiculously great weekend band.

Just before the traditional naming of the Grand Portage Royalty the grounds were filled with music from the drums and singers and people dressed in dancer’s regalia—or just plain clothes—danced joyously.
