Ground will be broken in June 2009 on a new visitors center and Grand Portage State Park headquarters in Grand Portage. T. L. Construction of Floodwood, MN, the company that built the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center, was the low bidder for the project at $3,945,535.
The project is a collaboration of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT), the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. It will include an enhanced parking area/rest stop and State Park headquarters.
Todd Campbell, Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) Highway 61 corridor manager, said the site will be a “shared facility” like the one at Gooseberry State Park. Mn/DOT is overseeing construction of the parking area. “Mn/DOT worked on design for the roads, parking, and lighting,” said Campbell.
The DNR, working with a committee of Grand Portage community members and architect Peter Paulson created the design of the new visitor’s center and park headquarters.
Campbell said Mn/DOT hopes the project will be completed by Memorial Day 2010.
