Grand Portage Pow Wow and Rendezvous Days start August 12



 

 

The Grand Portage Rendezvous Days and Pow Wow will be held on August 12, 13, and 14, with events kicking off on Friday, the 12th, at 10 a.m. at the Great Hall at the National Monument, which will feature the Stone Bridge Singers.

The annual Grand Portage Pow Wow, sponsored by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe), is an American Indian cultural gathering focused on dance, song and family celebration. The Pow Wow includes traditional foods, music, craft stands, and other community events. Over 350 dancers participated in 2019’s Grand Portage Pow Wow. Midday Grand Entry Saturday and Sunday are particularly inspirational and colorful as U.S. and Canadian flags are raised to honor military veterans from Grand Portage. Staff bearers lead dancers dressed in traditional regalia into the Pow Wow ring. Through the Pow Wow, all people have the chance to experience Native American culture in a wonderful way. No workshops or games will be scheduled at the Depot during the Pow-Wow Grand Entry. Folks are encouraged to enjoy the Grand Entry and other Pow-Wow events.

Also taking place on Friday will be the Old Timers’ Softball game which will start at 6:30 p.m. and at 7 p.m. the Pow-wow Warm-ups and Royalty Contest will be held at the Pow-Wow Grounds.

Saturday’s line-up

The mixed softball tournament will start on Saturday at 8 a.m. (wooden bats for men, aluminum bats for women). In addition, registration for the one-mile and three-mile walk/run will be held.

At 10 a.m., there will be a Flag Raising held by the Grand Portage Honor Guard. Then, at 10:30 a.m., the walk-run will begin.

At 1 p.m., the Grand Entry Pow-Wow honoring Grand Portage Veterans and the Flag Raising will take place. Bingo starts at 2 p.m. in the Fire Hall Garage. The Men’s Horseshoe Tournament begins at 5 p.m. at the softball field. At 7 p.m., the Evening Grand Entry begins.

Sunday

At 8 a.m., the mixed softball tournament resumes. Also, at 8 a.m., there will be breakfast at the Pow-Wow Grounds and a flag raising by the Grand Portage Honor Guard. Finally, at 1 p.m., the Grand Entry will begin.

Activities at the Grand Portage National Monument include music, dancing, games, craft demonstrations and hands-on workshops. Reenactors come from across the Midwest and Canada to camps and challenge each other at games and skills from the past. In addition, the reenactors will answer questions from the public while staying in character.

Entrance is free, but some activities might charge a materials fee.
