Grand Portage American Legion Post 2009 recently received recognition for its great success in recruiting new members. The post, established in 2009, started with 20 members. It now has 45 members, the largest growth in American Legion membership in the entire northeastern district.
Post Commander Arvid Dahl received a letter from Wayne Gilbertson, membership director, congratulating the Grand Portage membership team for its “continued hard work in the area of membership.”
With the letter was a certificate signed by American Legion 8th District Department Commander Al Davis announcing that Grand Portage Post 2009 had reached an all-time high in the 2009- 2010 membership campaign.
The Grand Portage Legion also received a letter of congratulations from American Legion National Commander Clarence E. Hill, who wrote, “To Post 2009, with sincere appreciation for your dedicated efforts to meet ‘The Hardest Easy Job Challenge’ for membership and for your service to our veterans and to our nation. It’s what keeps us strong.”
Post 2009 Vice-Commander Clarence Everson said the Grand Portage post is proud to have been recognized for its efforts. Everson, who is also the Grand Portage Veterans Services officer, encourages anyone interested in the American Legion to attend an upcoming meeting. Grand Portage Legion 2009 meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Old Log School Building. Post 2009 officers are Commander Arvid Dahl, Vice- Commander Clarence Everson, Finance Officer Ellen Altman, Adjutant Kelli Ann Leifeste, and Sergeant-at-Arms William Owens.
“We would like to continue to grow,” said Everson. “We want to help every veteran we can.”
