Grand Portage man dies in house fire

The Grand Portage, Hovland, and Colvill Fire Departments were paged to a fire at 7200 East Highway 61 at approximately 11:40 p.m. on December 28, 2011. Japheth “Jake” Carlson, 29, of Grand Portage perished in the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined and is being investigated by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

A Grand Portage man, 29-year old Japheth “Jake” Carlson, died in a house fire in Grand Portage on December 28.

The fire was reported by a passing motorist who saw flames and turned into the lakeside driveway at 7200 East Highway 61. The reporting party drove to a neighboring residence and called 911, stating that it looked like the point was on fire.

The Grand Portage, Hovland, and Colvill Fire Departments were paged at approximately 11:40 p.m. They arrived to find the house fully engulfed in flames.

The Hovland STOP team provided traffic control at the scene as the fire departments set up water drop tanks and searched for a water source to fight the fire.

Firefighters remained on the scene through the night. The Grand Portage Fire Department was the last to clear the scene at 4:30 a.m.

Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk said the cause of death and the cause of fire has not been determined. At press time, the fire was being investigated by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal and the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office.

Japheth is the son of Ed Carlson of Ecuador and Vivian Carlson of Grand Portage.
