On April 11 at 11:43 a.m., the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office received a request for assistance in locating Kim Crawford, 48, who had missed multiple days of work. Crawford was not at his home, but his dog was there. His ATV was gone. He was eventually found deceased, apparently killed in an ATV accident.
An “attempt to locate” message went out to local law enforcement agencies and area businesses and the post office were contacted in hopes that someone would have an idea about where Crawford had gone. Cook County Sheriff deputies, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, Border Patrol agents, and a Grand Portage Conservation Officer patrolled Grand Portage, but were unable to find Crawford or his ATV.
At about 12:03 p.m. on April 12, Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from a motorist on Upper Road in Grand Portage, reporting that he had found the ATV and Crawford nearby, deceased.
The ATV was roughly 100 feet off the road in the wooded ditch. It appears that the ATV had crashed into several trees approximately 4 inches in diameter. Crawford was not wearing a helmet.
Crawford’s body was transported to North Shore Hospital by Grand Portage Ambulance and then to Hibbing where an autopsy will be conducted. No criminal conduct is suspected.
