At about 4 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, a security guard at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino was assaulted. The alleged assailant was Steven Warren Robert Anishnabie, 21, of Grand Portage.
According to the Cook County Law Enforcement complaint, the attack occurred near the security podium in the casino. The security guard, Rollin Baird, was stabbed in the neck with a knife.
Grand Portage Ambulance took Baird to Cook County North Shore Hospital. According to the law enforcement report, the initial report from the hospital indicated that Baird suffered a stab wound to the neck that very nearly missed the carotid artery.
Baird was transferred to Essentia – St. Mary’s Hospital for preventative treatment and is expected to fully recover. At press time he had been released from the hospital.
According to the complaint, Anishnabie left the casino after the attack, but returned shortly after and surrendered a knife to another security guard. Cook County Sheriff ’s Deputies responded and Anishnabie was taken into custody. He was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of .17.
Anishnabie was charged with premeditated 1st degree attempted murder.
At press time Anishnabie was incarcerated at Cook County Jail. His first hearing was scheduled for Friday, May 17.
