Grand Portage Lodge & Casino will be presenting another amazing show 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14—A Tribute to Prince by Chase + Ovation.
Ovation brings the music of the 1984 film Purple Rain to life. The sound track from Purple Rain is one of the top-selling albums of all time and the members of Ovation all love the music. They enjoy sharing the innovative sounds of the ’80s from Prince, as well as Morris Day and The Time and Apollonia 6 who also shine on the Purple Rain soundtrack.
On the band’s colorful website— purple of course—performers list quirky connections to the Minneapolis superstar. Front man Chase was a stand-in for Prince on the set of Graffiti Bridge, the not so well known sequel to Purple Rain. And when he was young, Prince’s mother was his babysitter!
Drummer Lakestar has performed with Brown Mark, the bassist from Prince & The Revolution. Dancers Kitty and Jenna were background dancers in the Paisley Park video.
And percussionist Cory Eischen has perhaps the most convoluted connection— he was an usher at Prince’s cousin’s retirement party and chauffeured Prince’s cousin’s friend’s bachelor party. And guitarist Johnny Holiday jokes, “There’s a movie? Is it cool?”
The teasing on the website aside, the band takes the music seriously, noting that they do not rely on gimmicks such as costumes and wigs to get the musical point across. To Ovation the music is paramount.
Head up to Grand Portage Lodge & Casino on Saturday, April 14 to hear all your favorites—Let’s Go Crazy, The Bird (The Time), Take Me With U, Sex Shooter, (Apollonia 6), Always In My Hair, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, (The Time), and much more, including of course, Purple Rain.
The cost is $10 at the door and tickets are available now at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino. To see more about Chase + Ovation, visit www.ovationmusicgroup.com/band.html.
