The Grand Portage Head Start class had an exciting community field trip on Thursday, May 5 to celebrate Mother’s Day and the coming of spring.

They started with a trip to the Grand Portage Post Office where Postmaster Mary Deschampe helped them mail their gift to their moms. The children and Mary were delighted at the thought of the special gift arriving in mom’s mailbox.

The students then visited High Falls and hiked to catch the spray of the roaring falls from the observation deck. Of course there was lots of exploring along the way.

Back at the visitor center, they learned about the falls and the park from Ranger Rick Novitsky and enjoyed a picnic lunch.

The group also visited the local “Sugar Bush,” maple syrup operation, to tap maple trees. The children got to decorate their own bags as Erik Carlson hung them to catch the sap. They were then able to try the warm sap as it was being boiled.

They topped off the day with another hike to see a beaver dam.

Head Start Cook Melissa Ullman was one of the adults accompanying the children. She said, “It was a beautiful day to be out there.”
