Grand Portage art opening Oct. 10

The Grand Portage Community Center is hosting an Art Opening of paintings created by the Grand Portage 2014 Summer Youth Program. These paintings are a collection of the Seven Grandfather Teachings and will hang as an installation at the center.

Paintings were facilitated by art therapist Belle Janicek, who worked with the children to design their ideas on paper and then transfer and paint images onto canvas. Among the Anishinaabe people the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers is a set of teachings on human conduct toward others.

The exhibit will display seven canvases titled Love, Respect, Wisdom, Truth, Courage, Humility and Honesty. The opening will take place on Oct. 10 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Grand Portage Community Center. Refreshments will be served. If you have questions, call Belle at Oshki Ogimaag School at (218) 475- 2112.

The mural project was funded by the Center of American Indian and Minority Health, University of Minnesota Indians into Medicine Community-Based Science Activities grant program (CSBA), which strives to raise the health status of the Native American population by educating students in the field of health care. Funding for the Grand Portage Summer Camp was funded by CSBA, Northshore Collaborative, and Cook County Community Fund Programs.
