As of July 2 Sunday liquor sales will be legal in Minnesota.
On March 7, Gov. Mark Dayton signed the bipartisan bill, which passed the House, 88-39, and the Senate, 38-28.
By repealing Sundays off-sale liquor sale, the legislators lifted a law that has been on the books since Minnesota became a state.
Hours for Sunday sales will be limited to 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new law bans delivery of liquor and carriers taking liquor store orders.
Grand Marais Liquor Store Manager Chris LaVigne said he would staff the liquor store to be open on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
“We have to give it a try,” he said.
When asked if the liquor store will remain open seven days of the week throughout the year, LaVigne said he would like to do so for the first year and then review the data.
“We will no doubt use less staff during the quiet times. But we need to give it a year so we can look back and see if this is something we can do year-round or not. For now the plan is to give it a try and see where it goes.”
Currently the liquor store is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Monday through Saturday. After Labor Day the hours drop from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the next Memorial Day.
