Grand Marais teen dies in vehicle rollover

A vehicle rollover on the Pike Lake Road in Grand Marais on Thursday, June 13 resulted in the death of Dylan Alexander Richard Marshall, 14, of Grand Marais.

The accident was reported to the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office by a homeowner near the site of the crash at 5:02 a.m.

The car, a 1999 Chevy Cavalier, was traveling east from Pike Lake toward Grand Marais about a half mile from the intersection with County Road 44 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Dylan Marshall, who was apparently riding in the back seat, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Marshall was not wearing a seat belt.

The other two occupants, both teenage boys, were wearing seatbelts and suffered non-life threatening injuries. One was transported by Cook County Ambulance to Cook County North Shore Hospital and the other traveled to the hospital by his own means. They were both treated and released.

Responding to the accident were the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Cook County Ambulance, Grand Marais First Responders, and the Grand Marais Volunteer Fire Department. Also assisting was the Cook County STOP traffic control team. Pike Lake Road was shut down for several hours as officials mapped the accident site.

Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk said the names of the other vehicle occupants cannot be released at this time. Sheriff Falk said the accident continues to be investigated by the Sheriff ’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol. Once state patrol reports, toxicology and blood test results are available and the investigation is completed, the case will be reviewed by the county attorney’s office for any potential charges.

The community has rallied around the Marshall family. Dylan’s friends held an impromptu candlelight vigil at the Cook County Skate Park on June 14. The Sunday, June 16 Music by the Lake event at The Landing at Devil Track was dedicated to the family. An account has been set up in honor of Dylan Marshall at the North Shore Federal Credit union.

The family held a memorial service and celebration of Dylan’s life on Tuesday, June 18 at their home in Grand Marais.
